Utah Jazz Trademarks

Utah Jazz (often referred to as simply “The Jazz”) is an American professional basketball team that competes in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a part of the league’s Western Conference, Northwest Division.

Their team name seems unrelated to Salt Lake City where they play as the franchise originated in New Orleans as an expansion team in 1974. They were called the “New Orleans Jazz” – picked as part of a name-the-team contest that looked to honor the New Orleans heritage of creating jazz music. Just five years later in 1979, The Jazz moved from New Orleans to Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Jazz didn’t have a successful start – not making the playoffs until 1984. However, the rise of two franchise players, John Stockton and Karl Malone helped contribute to The Jazz’s late 1980s success. The pair became one of the most famed pick-and-roll duos in NBA history. The Jazz didn’t miss the playoffs again from 1984 until 2004, partly thanks to new coach Jerry Sloan who took over in 1988 and helped make the team a powerhouse of the league. They reached the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998 but lost both times to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.

With Stockton and Malone leaving in 2003, the team hit a dip in success, missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. They didn’t have much success again until more recently when All-Star players Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell helped The Jazz come back for title contention. In the 2021/22 season, they had the league’s best regular season record.

Famous Utah Jazz trademarks

Despite being known as the “New Orleans Jazz” for five years, the Utah Jazz didn’t start trademarking their assets until they moved and changed their team name. The franchise has filed for a whopping 47 trademarks, which is impressive considering they haven’t been the most successful NBA team. This shows they understand the importance of their intellectual property. Let’s take a look at some of the most famous Utah Jazz trademarks, registered by Jazz Basketball Investors, Inc.

Utah Jazz logo

The first thing that Utah Jazz filed for a trademark was their team logo in 1983. The Utah Jazz logo has only had two significant variations throughout its time. Originally, it featured the words “Jazz” written in large purple letters with the base of the “J” being a basketball and the line of the “J” looking like a musical note. “Utah” is written in smaller black letters above. This was the team logo until 1996.

The logo then changed to a circular badge with the Salt Lake City mountains in the background and “Utah” curving around the upper part of the badge. “Jazz” is then written boldly in front of the mountains and extends out of the circle. This design only changed in color from 1996 until 2016. The Jazz then went back to its original logo in 2016, only changing the color from purple to navy. The registration for their latest logo trademark applies to:

Wrapping up

Since Utah Jazz left New Orleans in 1979, they’ve kept their new name, and hardly changed their logo or even team colors. However, despite this and their moderate success, they’ve done well to register for 47 trademarks. They clearly recognize the importance of protecting their assets and the filings are very thorough in what they want trademarking.

However, though this is impressive, the team has mostly only trademarked their team name, logo variations, and the new UJ Jazz Gaming esports team. Utah Jazz is well known for its “Jazz Bear” mascot that has represented the team since 1994 and notoriously rides around the arena on a motorbike at halftime. However, the mascot has not been trademarked. Utah Jazz has done better than most teams to protect their IP and assets, potentially saving themselves millions in legal battles down the line, but they could always be doing more, especially as the franchise has a value of roughly $2 billion.
